guitar hero on tour

On one hand, this promo video makes Guitar Hero On Tour look absolutely horribly shit awful. On the other hand, the video makes Guitar Hero On Tour shit awful.

I digress. I'd want to try it before I wrote it off, but I'm pretty sure whoever they paid to make that clip is the same guys responsible for the advert for the Nintendo Powerglove. (video after jump for your reference)

I love Guitar Hero on Wii and I love my DS. Will I be getting GH:OT? I don't know. Hopefully it's more fun than it looks in that clip.

Wearable MIDI trigger devices: Drum Pants

I see your wah wah boots and raise you with Drum Pants! This are apparently the creation of Tyler Freeman, a new wave artist working with code and techno-tomfooler instead of paint. (loosely lifted from his site: odbol.com

Basically it's a cheap MIDI keyboard (in this case a PSR-200) gutted and the keys replaced with little piezo trigger patches which are then sewn into the pants. The triggering of the piezo transducer is then voiced through the midi device and speaker of your choice.

The future of drum pants:

It would also be fun to employ a set of drumsticks for more precise drumming, but unless you're going to surgically attach them to your hands, you won't be a true cyborg.

More clips after the jump.

Via Gizmodo.com

This clip features Tyler combining the drum pants with a Loopstation

DSMidiWifi youtubery!

I am a bit of a fan of the work of tobw, and I'm happy to belatedly report that there's some groovy little videos of dsmidiwifi on youtube to demonstrate the potential of the very same. The potential for the DS as a musical input device is tremendous and I love seeing clips like this. The homebrew community for the DS is amazing.

dsmidiwifi @ tobw.net

Another video after the break.

Benji7905 writes:

I did a Kaoss pad for the DS, using PALib and DSMidiWifi libs. The DSMidiWifi team already did a Kaoss Pad demo for their lib but I wasn't happy with it, so I did one myself. Here are the features so far : When you touch the screen, it sends 3 CC : one for the X axis, one for the Y axis and a third CC corresponding to the status of the screen : 128 when it is pressed, 0 when it's released. A and B can send CCs too, just like the sreen press : 128 when it's pressed, 0 when it's released

That way you can do a nice effect with a Beat Repeat and an AutoFilter in Ableton Live, like on a real Kaoss Pad

Excellent work!

Nina Simone Clips

I love boing boing, which is where i got this amazing clip from. It's a rare clip of Nina Simone from 1962 performing the Israeli folk song Eretz Zavat Chalav u'Dvash or Land of Milk and Honey.

After the jump is a selection of other Nina Simone clips from around the same vintage. Nice way to check out older performances and rarities. Performances like these need need to be seen. Having them available to see improves your quality of life, thankyou YouTube uploader.

Here's an improvisation from 1961

When I was In My Prime - 1961. Really lovely and mournful performance too. Just wonderful.

Zungo - 1961. This is introduced at the end of the previous clip.

For All we Know - 1961. Lovely song, and there's some really nice arpeggiated harp and piano in there that is frankly, inspiring.

Aleatoric Composition... THE MOVIE!

In my screen debut, I present to you, aleatoric composition THE MOVIE! Starring me. This outlines the method for this method of composition in a (hopefully) fairly simple straightforward & accessible manner. Please forgive the average sound and video quality, last night was the first time I have ever edited video, and I spent several hours trying to figure out how to get it uploaded and have it play correctly.

You can download the midi result here. Should you wish to do something with this midi file, please do so, I would love to hear (geddit?) from you.

As a follow up to this post on Aleatoric Composition, I was contacted by a writer from Future Music Magazine, which has spurred Dylan & myself onto more work in this area.

This time we went down to the train station and recorded an entire platform of video, and scored it as faithfully as possible in Sibelius. I took a little bit of liberty with what exactly made up each note - as at the far ends of the train station the grubby marks (notes) get pretty faint, and I didnt want 24 bars of silence before anything at all happened.

Dylan was along for the ride, and I have supplied him the midi. I'm going to have a tinker with it, and see what can be done using the music composed from the train platform. If we manage to cobble something that's not entirely awful together, you can expect another youtube monstrosity from yours truly.

"Hey you now horny disco"

I am testing out Writer a beta blogging program from the Microsoft, so excuse me if something happens that is a little bit strange.

It's just too good to be true. "Thankyou green light lovers. Hey you now. Hey you now horny disco." Excellent.

(Update. For anyone who is curious: Writer appears to blow - at least form the perspective of being able to read/edit the post from within Movable Type as it fills it full-o-tags(tm). Also it doesn't like more complex html it seems - such as the embed tag).

The Mountain Goats - Woke Up New filmclip

I am a huge Moutain Goats fan. They're a band that do indy guitar folk perfectly. Its the kind of music that recognises that sometimes you feel shit, but picks you up and puts you back on your feet. (Second time In two days I'm using this phrase but) I certainly don't mean to come off as being twee, but hey there you go.

Here is the clip for Woke Up New, which is off their new album Get Lonely, which I just picked up today.

The clip is directed by Rian Johnston who directed the film Brick which is getting pretty good reviews I believe.

Video game tunes on (insert wacky instrument here)

One of the thing that is of guaranteed interest from me is video game music stuff. A darling of the blog crowd is basically any recreation or rendition of classic video game tunes. Every music nerd should look at these clips at the museum of techno and have a laugh. I'm pretty sure this reminds me of my art school days, where drinking alcohol that came in the box format seemed like a fantastic idea. Harp Guitar Gathering

Stephen BennettHere is a nice collection of clips of harp guitar players. I've always been fascinated by these guys. It would have most likely been my fanatical tea party fandom from a few years back that would have done the trick I think. (I must clarify that I mean the Good Tea Party stuff not the newer ones. The combination of beautiful alternate tunings and alternate instrumentation make that album an absolute classic. But I digress.

The instruments themselves look amazing, and you can catch a glimpse of other guitar rareities in the background as well. The clips seem to be taking a while to get down, so might be a tad 56k unfriendly. They're worth waiting for though!

Guitar Hero Controller + Max/Msp = Fun

In the department of more crazy things that can be done using Max/Msp (see: cycling74, is this hack that lets you use the PS2 Guitar Hero controller to control a simple sequencer. It assigns samples to each of the 5 fret positions (read buttons) and also input through the strumming lever. You can have up to 5 banks of samples, giving you 25 different samples to work with as well as the control achievable strumming.

This all sounds fairly hokey until you see the video in action and you start to appreciate the simple beauty of this idea. I really have to clear my desk and spend some quality time with Max/Msp because most of the time when I have a wild dream about a music interface or program, it usually already exists as a Max/Msp program.
