Nerds Gone Wild!

ngw_header.jpg

In non-onetonnemusic related news, I've been doing a bunch of bits and pieces for Nerds Gone Wild! It's a free magazine, distributed here in Australia, but it doesn't suck, and you can also download complete pdf issues for those of us who don't live downunder. For example you can read up on Why it's fun to hate Sony written by yours truly. There's lots of nerd articles, reviews and tasty giblets for the nerd about town.

Futhermore, in an tantalizing development, Nerds Gone Wild has launched their website and while I'm sure there's tweaks and things to be done, already you can check out some juicy content and be excited. Hurrah!

Music nerd fun with Patent Search

needalife.gif

How do you know you are in desparate need of a life? When searching google patent search for patent filings for music gear seems like a good idea.

1977 Moog Music Patent

"An electronic music synthesizer is disclosed in which the sound producing chain includes a voltage-controlled oscillator, band-pass filter, low-pass filter, and amplifier in which selected control currents are supplied to low impedance points within the synthesizer circuit from a resistor matrix"

Oh my! This reads like geek porn. And another one!

Ibanez TS-9 (tubescreamer) Patent

he invention relates to the provision of a sustainer that is compatible with single coil pickups and stacked, single coil pickups. In this regard, feedback is substantially eliminated by processing and altering the direct electromagnetic radiation emitted by the driver.

Bit-tunes fans will LOVE the description given to the Gameboy Patent application - Electronic Gaming Device with Pseudo Stereophonic Sound Generating Capabilities. Come on Nintendo, it didn't sound that bad did it? Oh yeah it did.

Sadly my search for Robot Monster & Kilbot didn't turn up anything interesting. I did however find a AMUSEMENT DEVICE SIMULATING A GUITAR CONTAINING A CONCEALED WEAPON (!)

Love it. Thankyou internet.

Free EMU IIIX Sample Library CDs

I'm in the middle of cleaning up my study. (It's a horrible mess) And I came across these. They're sample library CDs for the EMU IIIx (Edit: I think they also work the EMU ESI-4000 units maybe? I can't remember to be honest). I used to work at a music shop and they were lying around upstairs in our miscellaneous broken bits department (that's where your stuff goes to die when you take it back to the shop and they don't do anything to fix it).

Anyway, they weren't doing a great deal there, and I was optomistic that I could find a program to extract the samples because I didn't have the EMU hardware. About a zillion years ago these cds retailed for $125 each (AUD) here in Australia but now they're pretty much worthless unless you have a way of extracting the samples or the appropriate hardware.

They are: Emulator Standards, Vintage, World Percussion/Ensemble, Sound Effects & Emu Classics.

So. If you have the appropriate hardware and are willing to take a picture of your EMU box with a bit of paper with "onetonnemusic is rather good" or something to that effect written on it, I will mail out these sample cds to you free. Email info at ausmusician.com to enter. First in, best dressed!

File: under Electroplankton, Cthulhu & Blues

Over on the shiny new CDM forums I came across this comment from Thomas from Milezero.org

Actually, I recently finished a sketch of an electroplankton song, in case anyone wants to hear.

And here's the link.

Basically. It's absolutely fantastic. Its a electroplankton composition, which is a blues song about HP Lovecraft's 'The Shadow over Innsmmouth'. What's not to love? This song rocks. Featuring lyrics such as "Yeah a whole lotta time till the shugga starts to roam!" it's got nerd cred in bags. It combines all sorts of pop-sub-culture references into a rather catchy tune. I dig it, and so will you (if you are a certified music nerd). Get it now!

BBC's music cubes

Okay some explanation may be required. If you head over here you can create your very own music cube. The idea is that you can select music genres that reflect your taste. You can then put this anywhere, or just play with it yourself. Folks can tune into BBC radio stations that stream that kind of music online.

If you are anything like me, I listen to a wide variety of tunes, and to have access to high quality online radio is a lovely thing. The quality of the streaming is very respectable as well.

I love the bbc is doing all this fantastically progressive work with new media, and is another reason why publically funded broadcasting is a good idea. They've released symphonies online, they are making many of their tv shows available online (albiet to UK based visitors - as they have paid the UK television license which funds the bbc) and much more.

The genres you can choose from is a little limiting, but I feel that the music cube you see here is a reasonable representation of the kind of music that I'm personally into. There's also an element of personal identity that you build through your musical tastes, and this is a nice reflection of that.

It's a fun excercise to put this sort of thing together so give it a try!

a japanese guy in a leopard print suit. excellent. For those of us not lucky enough to live where they have concerts of video game music (read japan) you should perhaps have a look at this.

Some achievements are for the good of all mankind. This is one of them... The Super Mario World recorded with full instrumentation. Sometimes very faithful to the original and sometimes just plain out there. You gotta hear the "p block special do the mario". Mariocore. Excellent.

The creator of this amazing effort deserves a hearty big pile of cash for their amazing interpretation of the Super Mario World soundtrack. audio engineering: the gospel according to jp22

an angry young manThis is too funny not to pass on. If you have an even rudimentary understanding of audio engineering there's big music nerd laughs to be had over on recording.org. The protagonist is a guy called jp22. He's damn sure he knows what he's talking about. Everyone else is a bit dubious...

Here's a sample:

JP22: I could easily give back any minimal dynamics lost compressing with a bit more eq on my mixer

BrianAltenhofel: That says it all. That was the first sign you didn't know what you were talking about.

JP22: Oh yeah? Meaning, I can easily bring up the highs (HF's or MF's) on my mixer's eq and once again bring back or hear what I lost dynamically, its simple, if I take a little out at the beginning of the chain with compression I can cerntainly just as easily put it back towards the end of the chain. Shows how much you know!

Indeed. Head on over to recording.org and Roffle yourself some mayo.

pathways to musicOver on Get LoFi they have a rather nice video from 1972. It's an instructional slideshow with audio on the history of electronic music.

There's some fantastic potential for sampling the vocals to this, it's rather nicely narrated in that instructional video sort of way. It's also rather educational. Hurrah for education! Theres a 6mb and 40mb version, for the full experience I recommend the 40mb extravaganza.

equalizer watchI don't know what's more embarassing - the fact that this watch with a built in equalizer exists, or that I want one. Probably the latter. Reading the website it's not exactly clear if the EQ actually works - they say "equalizer effect" so I'm taking that as meaning that it could just be blinged out. Regardless, it looks pretty cool, and I don't know of many music gadget type watches so it gets a post.

looking for a bully (australia only)

Just a quick one. On the forums we've got a researcher SBS tv looking for a bully/ex bully. They're doing a forum on bullying in two weeks time and want to find people who:

"Bullied someone while they were at school (either past or present) without realising the full implications of their actions at the time and now regret it and feel a bit bad. Let's call this the Remorseful Bully"

"Bullied someone at school (past or present) and don't think about it too much as it is not a big deal and every kids goes through it when they are at school and then grows out of it. Let's call this the Get-Over-It & It-Was-No-Big-Deal Bully"

Sounds like a pretty worthwhile thing. See the forum post for the full details.

assorted konfabulatory audio sillyness

Konfabulator.jpg

Konfabulator make a Mac/PC cross platform compatible host system for widgets. Widgets are little programs that sit on your desktop, they can be newsfeeds, weather updates, little quote generators, basically anything. A lot of the more popular Konfabulator plug-ins have shown up as Dashboard widgets for the Mac.

They've just been bought by Yahoo and now you can download the full version of Konfabulator for free. Why I think this actually of any interest is that you can get your hands on some little music making widgets and while they're only a momentary distraction, I was thinking of the potential of having really basic music tools at your disposal on the desktop of your machine. I'd love to see some more widgets that feature this kind of stuff where you can noodle out baby compositions and dump to Midi, or you could just record your system bus or whatever. At any rate. Konfabulator. It's now free. You might enjoy some of the musical widgets and have a bit of a laugh. You can customise the widgets also, and so it strikes me that we might be seeing more of these as Yahoo starts to expose it to a lot more users.

Here's the ones I've found so far if you come across any others let us know! Stonewave, Drumpad, MilliTron, VolBoard And Konfabulator.com for the program.

wood ipod cover

flikr_woodipod.jpgObviously the cold hard inhuman feel of white plastic wasn't the go for a modder who (at least on flckr) goes by the nick of ZapWizard. He's very carefully and meticulously crafted a wooden cover for his 4G ipod. That's right. Wood. Apparently the touchwheel still works (it's underneath the wood) as "Touch-wheels need an air-less dielectric to sense your[sic] touching the surface".

Which sounds fairly uber weenie to me, but I think it's looks rather funky, and I would proudly pull that out of my pants. *shifts in seat uncomfortably* Err. That didn't go quite right. Anyway. not to worry.

It's a rather remarkable homage to the wood panelled audio systems from the 70's. I would like to think that the iPod was only filled with Boney M and the BeeGees & Sesame Disco. But then I think that about all iPods.

russian diy cassette dj setup

casette_dj.jpgDJ Aptem has just become the weeny envy of many music nerds with his very fine homemade DJ Cassette Decks. He's deconstructed 2 variable speed decks, and fitted them into a mdf mixer type situation with a jog wheel, EQ and mixer. Very nice retro funk appeal going on here. I think the folks who still make cassette tapes should sit up and take notice, maybe try and start a vinyl style revival. Return of the dead formats!

Kinda cool DIY effort too - wonder if it was out of necessity or just because he could. Regardless, it's a a damn fine effort, looks rather nice and modular too.

You can see his flikr photoset here - also a nice chap seems to have mirrored some of his mix sets - which you can get to from the comments on the flikr photoset. Also check his website which is probably copping a mega hammering right now here

I also suspect this will upset google image searchers looking for the vicarious pleasure that is brought to them by searching for Various geometic shapes.
