ml ipod (lets you use winamp with your ipod)

ml_ipod.gif

ml_ipod is a plugin for winamp that lets you use Winamp 5 instead of iTunes. On the mac, i'm pretty happy to use iTunes, but when I'm on a PC, Winamp is my app of choice.

It lets you manage your ipod music, has autofill for ipod shuffles, and a bunch of other cool stuff. My fave would have to be the DJ Mike Llama (as pictured above) with the white headphones. Nice.

soundpad 1.0 and notepad 1.3 for palm released

SoundPad-10.gifI've got a bit of a thing for applications for PDA's that allow you to make music on the move. If you are a palm user you might be interested to know that Minimusic have released Soundpad 1.0 and Notepad 1.3 for the palm devices. Notepad is a notation program that allows you to compose tunes, and soundpad allows you to create "rich sounds" on the fly using the processor power of the palm alone.

"We designed the Krikit Synth specifically for handheld computers and the Palm OS. We used FM synthesis techniques to keep our sound files extremely small and kept optimizing the synth until it ran well on even the slowest CPUs," says Chad Mealey, President of miniMusic. "It's like having the best synth keyboard from the 80s in your pocket"

Sounds pretty cool. I don't have a palm device but if anyone checks this out and has some thoughts about it, bung me an email or post it in the forums and I'll post it up here.

croque monsieur update

I got along to the Croque Monsieur gig at Bar open this weekend, and I'd like to retract my earlier statement about them being cool. They're DAMN COOL - they put on a fun show, and seeing them in a music venue setting gave me a whole another appreciation for the kind of thing they do. Lots of folks up and dancing and getting into it. Very good energy in the crowd and on stage. If you do get into crazy mixed up gypsy (or gippy) tunes then check them out next time they're playing near you if you get a chance.

vestax vrx2000

vestax_VRX2000.JPG

This is pretty funky. Vestax makers of fine turntablist gear have announced the VRX2000. The 2000 bit makes it sound faster for sure yeah? For sure. Makes a lot of sense if you gotsa have that tangible vinyl thing happening. I don't dig on that so much as it tends to take the focus away from the music away and focus on a really abitrary aspect of the live performance. I do get into turntablists but I don't think it's the be all and end all.

At any rate you can cut your own vinyl using this puppy - looks pretty nice. I wonder how expensive the blanks are?

Via engadget. Check out vestax.com for more info.

Edit - according to at least one blog commentor, this isn't new. No idea if that's true or not. It's cool and probably fabulously unaffordable so on that face I'm happy to post it anyhow!

spare a gold piece guvna?

Hamish Rosser drummer from the Vines is looking for work. Infact he's desparate enough to pop an ad in one of the Sydney streetpress magazines. It's amazing that you can be in a big that got so massive and still have very little to show for it.

The advert goes like-a this "Vines drummer available for gigs and recording. Hamish 0415 *** ***."

Here's the news.com.au article Thanks (e) from the OT forums!

ot_forums.jpg
Hey kids, just a note to say that onetonnemusic's user forums have had a bit of a brush up, so you can check out the new look here.

The forum has over 10,000 posts by a small and active community. It's got genre specific forums, for sale forums, and general off topic chat also. There's a friendly community of regulars and an open chance to post releases and gig info on the Music News Forum. Everyone is welcome to join in and chat, so check it out.

croque monsieur are cool

croque_monsieur.jpgI was in Degraves St in Melbourne yesterday, and I stumbled across Croque Monsieur. They're a 6 piece group who do crazy eastern european, jazz, gyspsy type music. They do really nice improvised style tunes and have really nice sound.

They're playing next saturday at Bar Open on Brunswick Street from 9.30pm onwards. It's a free gig and they're good. So if you're up in that end of town go check them out cos I plan to, and I'll be sneaking off on a mates party to do so. I'm talkin' dedication to the moosic man!

Croque Monsieur's website which is worth a look even if how I've decscribed them doesn't ring your bells.

free sampletank 2 se upgrade

Sampletank.jpgIt's becoming rapidly apparent to me that IK Multimedia actually care about the customers who keep them in the style to which they have become accustomed. If you have SampleTank 1SE as a Digidesign bundle, you can get a free upgrade to SampleTank2 SE. It's a bit refreshing from an industry that has been known in the past to make you pay for point upgrades to find a company who is willing to give something away even if it does possibly bag them more upgrades from the SE version. Nice work IK, you are in my bag of companies that I think are quite nice (for whatever that's worth).

glideascope remix comp

glideascope_comp.jpg

There's a remix comp going on over at Glideascope (I know, weird name) that looks pretty damn tasty. You remix the track Big Big Disgrace and you could get your mix put on their upcoming album Audio Cinematography, and IK Multimedia have ponied up $2,500 USD worth of their software for first, second and thirdplace. Also included is a year's worth of releases from Dark Ghost Records and the chance to show your work to potentially get signed. Sounds pretty damn nice if you ask me.

You've got until the 6th of June to get your entry in.

new creative zen neeon

Bears! Just what portable audio needs more ofCreative have released some snaps of the new Zen Neeon, featuruing 10 different colours, 7 different screen colours and also as pictured right - a bunch of Stik-ons (that's marketing speak for stickers I believe). As Gizmodo rightly points it out, it's probably worth waiting around for the photo version, with OLED display. Once you get past the fact that these are probably a little smaller and functionally identical to other devices then it's really down to the silly add-ons like the Stik-ons that will sell these things. Still 16 hours battery time, voice recording and FM radio are nice features I wish my iPod had. I'm sure they'll be surfacing here in Australia very soon. These are in the same market as the iPod mini so it's fairly safe to assume that they'll be in the sub $400AUD price bracket.

are you located in the uk?

If so, go on over to the Penguin Remixed site where you can download audio versions of parts of penguin books and you can possibly win stuff. It's kinda a nice idea, and shows that Penguin are a bit more aware and savvy than I would of previously given a book publisher credit for. So put some Drucula or Around the World in 80 days and make some muzak!

the tofu hut = excellent

tofu_hut.jpgIf you are after BUCKETS of links to music blogs who host music and stuff for you to listen to and get into, I recommend you hightail it over to The Tofu Hut and check out this incredible list of music sites.

There's even a miscellaneous section with links to zmag's collection of Noam Chomsky recordings. Click for Noam! I've been getting into a lot of what Mr Chomsky has to say, and i'm amazed at what an incredible person he really is, and how much he has contributed to activism and intelligent debate everywhere.

electronic musician april reviews online now

blue_mic.jpgElectronic Musician has their reviews from the April available online. I think this an applaudable effort from the EM crew - those reviews have appeared in the magazine a couple of months ago now and if you wanna check it out or refer to it online you can. Brilliant.

The more publications that get used to distributing online as a matter of course the better they will be off as more and more devices are capable of displaying them. If I can get a bit "futurey" for a moment, I think that it won't be long before everyone's phone will have a hard drive and sport PDA type functionality - and also have a flexible/large display to facilitate rich content to the very same devices. You mark my nerdy words.

ping pong as control interface

pingpong.jpg

This one is too weird to miss. Some NYU Interactive Telecommunications Program's New Interfaces for Musical Expression class folks have made with ping pong paddles as sample triggers. I love that theres now a class at university dedicated to new interfaces - there was this guy at my arts school who spent a lot of time collecting old keyboards to pull apart and use for this kind of stuff that would be a gold at this sort of thing. I wonder if I can track him down? Lets see. Hey you, yes you the guy from the University of Tasmania who lives in the sculpture department who is into interface design (in 2001 you were there)... bung me an email! Now to wait...

making music software for free

pd_screen.jpgCreate Digital Music have got a great post up about what's available for both Mac and PC in terms of making music applications for free. It doesn't get much cheaper than that! It still looks pretty hardcore to do this, but this sort of thing was unimaginable a few years ago. PD (Pure Digital) is the PC platform free audio application and it looks quite amazing actually - and with plugins has the ability to be used as a VJ instrument for video processing too. Hotdamn.

movie recommendation: the corporation

corporation.jpgNot OT's usual forte, but just a note to say if you get the chance to see this movie please do. It's a really powerful documentation of the history, and what's happening right now with Corporations. It's essential viewing for pretty much everyone. Very moving, very well put together, and very needed. There's some stuff in this that confirms a lot of stuff that the average person suspects, and some just plain shocking and difficult stuff to watch. Features a bunch of surprisingly candid corporate CEOs and also a bunch of amazing critical thinkers such as the amazing Noam Chomsky.

See it now, and tell your friends.

cliqhop.gifSometimes you come across something so good online you can't believe your luck. An internet acquaintence of mine points me in the direction of somafm. I'm listening to the cliqhop station right now, and it's so damned good I cannot believe my painted-on made of paddle pop sticks and bad ham magyver style constructed - ears.
