Just a quick note really to say that a letter a day has had to go on the backburner. I had visions of the first couple of months of my self employment being quite easy going, punctuated with trips downstairs to play Playstation, and going out in my kayak.

What has actually happened is a bit more exciting. I've been absolutely flat out, which is actually very good news as I'm very happy to be busy, but it has meant that a little fun side project has had to move back on my list priorities. I haven't forgotten about it all, it's just less important than my paying clients. Normal service should resume as soon as possible.

Okay hopefully back on track, got back from Melbourne last night. As a side note, last time I did "something a day", it nearly damn killed me, and I'm determined not to do this at the cost of my sanity, so if I end up taking a day here and there off, it's only so I don't go bonkers. Apologies in advance etc.

It's day 1 of working for myself. As a little present for myself, I decided to do something fun every day of February. Last time I did something like this it nearly broke my brain, but it was also a stack of fun and I'm keen to have another shot. This time around it's a Letter a Day - I was going to go really plain and typographic, but I suffer from a pathological inability not to whack eyes and ears on things and am driven to turn any shape into a character. So here's day 1, an Athletic Abdominal Snowman.

A Letter A Day.

Just in case you've picked up one of my little postcards and are wondering what "A Letter A Day" is, for the month of February I'll be illustrating a letter and sticking it up here for the world to see. It's simply a fun project with no other aim than design for the joy of it, and to celebrate my first month of working for myself.

I'm actually not sure how carried away I will get with this project, but I'm keen to do some nice bits and pieces, so check back over the course of the month and see what I get up to!

On that note, If you have a design project you'd like to discuss please do not hesitate to get in touch - I'd be most grateful! I do print design, web design and fun (the having of).

Creative Grab Bag Book

So I got some great news today. There's a book I submitted work to ages ago and they are printed and I get a copy. Hurrah!

A little bit about the book. Ethan Bodnar, a seriously talented young designer had a bit of an idea where he would call for designers to show a.) a bit of their regular work, and b.) be assigned a task which is not something they normally do. I got digitally manipulate a photograph, which basically entailed combining my vector illustration style with a photo. Now I'm actually quite scared to see how my work stacks up beside all the other amazing designers but I'm really happy to have been given this opportunity.

And quite just stunned at how talented this young designer is. I know he's embarking on what is likely to be an amazing career, and it goes to show that inspiration comes from the least expected places.

Thanks Ethan, you rock.

You may find more about the Creative Grab Bag Book here and I will add some snaps from the book when it arrives!

Sometimes you are lucky enough to do work for people that when you get the end of the project you just feel happy and privileged to have been involved.

Verna + Hilda are two very clever ladies who do a really nice mixture of recycled vintage and new designed objects and they needed a bit of help with their website. I was happy to help.

The site is fun and functional which showcases their vintage meets yummy mummy on the high street look. Sometimes websites can be an exercise in simplicity and style - they don't always have to be massive, complicated (or expensive).

Our Cards Winter 2009

We thought it was high time we updated the page with some of our Winter 2009 card range. We have a mixture of cards and themes and are just in the middle of research for our next round of cards! It's been great fun so far and we're both really happy with how it's been going so far!

Markets

We've really enjoyed selling our cards at markets and have been lucky enough to sell at the Odd + Even and The Market as well as a guest spot on the lovely Verna + Hilda stall at the also very lovely Mother's market here in Hobart. There is just about nothing nicer than a day of chatting to lovely folks and seeing the amazing talent that is bubbling along nearby. A big thankyou also to Lou + Jimmy + Jane of the Bucket Brigade with whom we have shared stall space and red wine brainstorming sessions - they are nicer than a iced-vovo with a machine gun that shoots kitten kisses. Yep they're that nice. Thanks guys!

It's really inspiring and now would be a great opportunity to say hello and thanks to the other stallholders and market organisers as you guys all make it really amazing. Ta everyone!

Stockists

We have had a few stockist enquiries recently and we'd absolutely love to chat to anyone who is keen to stock our product. We like folks who do things nicely and sell nice stuff. Please get in touch if you think you could be a good match for us!

Zap Fitness 24/7 Launches!

Over the last few months I have been working on a project called Zap Fitness 24/7. It's a low cost, high quality gym that gives you 24 hour access, 7 days a week. You get your own keycard which you can use to "zap" in at any hour of the day. Brilliant for busy people, shift-workers, and people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get a regular gym.

I have designed and developed the entire and look and feel of Zap Fitness 24/7 in consultation with the client. This week the very first Zap Fitness 24/7 has opened for business. After the jump you can see the fit-out, signage and other nice little touches that we've been able to come up with for Zap Fitness 24/7.

This job has entailed the initial logo design, to the website, to the print material & advertising, promotional tee-shirts & hats, posters, brochures, internal and external signage. The whole project benefits from this overall approach and the consistency and identity of the new brand as a whole is very cohesive and striking.

Finally, I must mention that the Signage was produced by Eye Spy Signs and they have done an excellent job across the board, especially with some of the more involved aspects of this job - and I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks guys.
