Typeface Film Posters

To promote the local screening of the Film Typeface (Proudly presented by AGDA Tasmania), I printed a series of very limited edition letterpress posters. Some were put up in cafés and most of the remainder were given out on the night as a little bonus for the folks coming along.

Little Sweep Illustrations

Here’s some cute little illustrations I did for the Little Sweep guide for teachers for the UTAS Conservatorium of Music. My friend and local designer Cathy McAuliffe did the original logo and I was called in to grow her excellent identity for the Little Sweep into a educational guide to give to students. These illustrations featured in the final guide.

Screenprinting for fun at home

Click to download a copy of my free beginners guide to screenprinting

I recently ran a screen printing workshop for AGDA Tasmania, and I wrote up these notes for the nice people who came along. I thought It’d be good to share this. When I started looking into making my own home screen printing setup I found it difficult to get simple information of what I needed. So I wrote this.

It’s free to download, so please grab yourself a copy and feel free to pass it on if you think it’s useful. This is the first version, so if you would like me to clarify or add more information email me, and I’ll see what I can do!

Work in Progress: The Smallest

I thought it might be fun to document the design process on a personal project. I want to run a site focused on nice people things and places that are local to where I live. I guess a locality/design guide, but without ambitions of being a one stop shop, just trying to have an emphasis on things which I like and appreciate. I thought it might be good to profile nice people too.

Because I live in Hobart, and by definition the things we do down here are smaller scale and I’m railing against the idea of having some big overblown thing, or trying to be all things to everyone, I liked the idea of calling it the smallest. Above is the first cut of the logo.
Type treatment was heavily influenced by older signwriting like below, but also retains my more modern sensibilities:

As the project progresses I will add more to my website so you can see it grow.

My first encounter with letterpress.

I just didn’t know it at the time. So lovely.

Sometimes you see an opportunity for design and you do it just because you want to. It’s a great thing to be able to do. I put together this logo, and some poster concepts (after the jump) simply because I loved the idea and I wanted to encourage more of this sort of thing in Hobart.

Something odd happened…

busy_2.gif
Just a quick note really to say that a letter a day has had to go on the backburner. I had visions of the first couple of months of my self employment being quite easy going, punctuated with trips downstairs to play Playstation, and going out in my kayak.
What has actually happened is a bit more exciting. I’ve been absolutely flat out, which is actually very good news as I’m very happy to be busy, but it has meant that a little fun side project has had to move back on my list priorities. I haven’t forgotten about it all, it’s just less important than my paying clients. Normal service should resume as soon as possible.

Letter a Day – An Eccentric Ectoplasmic Elephant

Letter a Day – Datacrunching Doppleganger Ducks!

Okay hopefully back on track, got back from Melbourne last night. As a side note, last time I did “something a day”, it nearly damn killed me, and I’m determined not to do this at the cost of my sanity, so if I end up taking a day here and there off, it’s only so I don’t go bonkers. Apologies in advance etc.
